Why don't we spend more time trying to get man to mars, or trying to send out machines to other planets?

Forget wars, we need to put money in NASA. I am so interested in seeing whats out there beyond the milky way, and other planets. We should have man walk on mars and try to make new technology for faster spaceships or rockets that can get to mars in a month or 2. Why haven't we done this? Why isn't it ever in the media? There are sooooooooo many things undiscovered that we could learn about.
