Correct use of the word "contradict"?

So I'm writing an editorial on the execution of Dennis J Skillicorn and im trying to persuade others that it was not right. does it make sense to say that they are "contradicting" themselves by killing someone because he was involved with murder? is that the right way of using that word? thanks!!
